Insight matters

Rich people always think they are wise, but a poor person who has insight into character knows better.

The writer of Proverbs really invented the old saying “money can’t buy happiness.” There absolutely can be great treasure with tons of turmoil and unhappiness at the same time. Just because there is the “fattened ox,” as Solomon says here, doesn’t mean everyone has great relationships; in fact the opposite may be true- there may be hatred and resentment and bitterness, perhaps because of the presence of too much wealth. We need that insight in our culture more than ever- there’s nothing wrong with having plenty of money- but there are lots of things that are more important, and having that is no guarantee of contentment or peace or godliness or relationships that work.
